10 Things You Didn’t Know Siri Could Do

As much as we love Apple products, they have one major issue: they don’t come with great manuals. So while Siri is incredibly useful, far too many iPhone users are unaware of her extensive capabilities. That’s why we’ve rounded up 10 things you didn’t know Siri could do.

1. Look up nutrition information.

Want to lose weight? Ask Siri how many calories are in whatever you’re eating (or drinking!) so you can make better food choices.

2. Post to social media.

Now, you can update your accounts without ever touching your phone at all! Say, “Post to [Facebook or Twitter],” then dictate your words to Siri. She’ll show you the update before posting so you can make any changes if need be. Sadly, this doesn’t work for any other social media.

3. Do math.

Need to calculate convert cups to liters? Want to calculate a tip on your bill? Just ask Siri! She can even perform word problems if you’re feeling adventurous. And you can always ask her to “flip a coin,” or “roll the dice.”

4. Remember relationships.

If you want Siri to call or text somebody and you have more than one contact with that name, you have to say that person’s full name. This gets annoying if your girlfriend’s name is, say, Maria. So have Siri remember your relationship! Just say, “Maria Brown is my girlfriend.” Next time, you can say, “Call my girlfriend” instead of saying, “Call Maria Brown.” But in order for this to work, Siri has to know who you are. So make sure your info is set up under Settings > General > Siri > My Info.

5. Find film information.

As much as we love IMDB, it’s annoying looking through the website in the middle of a movie. Now, you can just ask Siri – a film buff who knows tons of trivia about movies. Need to find something to watch tonight? Learn what’s playing near you and get showtimes, trailers and reviews. If you have the Fandango app, you can even buy tickets easily via Siri.

6. Set location-specific reminders.

While setting location-specific reminders can bring up privacy concerns, it’s still one of Siri’s coolest features. As long as you have Location Services enabled, you can say, “Remind me to call Jay when I arrive at JFK,” and it will do so! You can also set reminders for when you’re leaving, arriving or at home or work – as long as you have those addresses listed under your own contact info.

7. Remember important dates.

Looking up flights for Thanksgiving but not sure when it is? Just ask Siri. In addition to holidays, Siri can also tell you when your friend’s birthday is. Just make sure your friend’s birthday is listed in his or her contact info! For bonus productivity points, ask Siri to remind you to buy your friend a gift.

8. Find restaurants.

If you’re hungry, Siri can help you out. She can show you the restaurants in your area or some other specified location. She can also search by cuisine, will tell you how expensive the restaurant is, and shows reviews via Yelp. Found something you like? Siri will use OpenTable to determine if they have any available reservations – and if you have the OpenTable app, you can book the restaurant, too!

9. Read and send emails.

Did you know that Siri can read and compose emails for you? When you ask her, “Read my email,” she’ll give a list of the subject lines, senders and time received of your most recent emails. You can ask her to read any of those messages. You can also ask her to search for emails by subject line, sender or date received. Want to write an email? Just say “Email [person] about [subject line]” and dictate your message.

10. Get sports info.

Sports fans, rejoice! Siri is the sports genius you didn’t know you needed. She can check several stats via Yahoo Sports – like when a team is playing, league standings and injury updates. She can also tell you what channel you need to watch the game tonight and several historical sports statistics so you can impress your friends.
